Andrej Platonow (1899–1951), als Sohn eines Eisenbahnschlossers in Woronesch geboren, begann mit zwölf Jahren, Gedichte zu schreiben. 1917 begrüßte er begeistert die Oktoberrevolution. Er studierte zunächst Geschichte und Philologie, absolvierte dann eine Ausbildung zum Elektrotechniker. Gleichzeitig arbeitete er literarischjournalistisch. Von 1922 bis 1926 leitete er als Ingenieur für Bewässerung und Elektrifizierung im Woronescher Gouvernement die Aufbauarbeiten in der Landwirtschaft. 1927 erlebte Platonow seinen Durchbruch als Schriftsteller. In seiner Literatur übte er radikale Kritik an den diktatorischen Methoden des sowjetischen Staates, was heftige Reaktionen zur Folge hatte. Stalin persönlich erklärte ihn zur Persona non grata. Ein Großteil seiner Werke konnte erst viele Jahre nach seinem Tod erscheinen. Heute gilt Platonow als einer der wichtigsten russischen Schriftsteller des 20. Jahrhunderts.
